Can you discuss how Gasco’s energy solutions have evolved over time, and how can alternative energy be applied to mining?
Our journey towards finding alternatives to diesel and oil began with liquefied natural gas (LNG), a cleaner and cost-effective fuel. We have also explored other solutions such as solar energy and waste energy recovery, which involves using waste like wood pallets and food waste to produce energy in an environmentally friendly way. In combination with LNG or LPG, biogas can supply the entire demand of hot water for a mining camp. Additionally, we supply LNG or LPG motors that generate power more cheaply and efficiently than traditional generators. The HIF (Highly Innovative Fuels) project in Magallanes is another initiative we are working on, which will produce hydrogen derivate fuels such as eGLP and dimethyl ether. These solutions will help make Chile’s power supply more sustainable, especially for mining operations.
Could you provide an example of Gasco’s work with a mining company on renewables?
We are currently working on a project that involves using solar energy to supply 80% of the hot water needed by a mining company, which will replace a significant amount of diesel and lead to economic and environmental savings. This initiative will also help in operational continuity by reducing dependence on trucks to transport fuel.
Given the rising energy prices globally, how can Chile ensure a steady power supply?
We believe that before focusing on power generation, we should focus on improving energy use and efficiency. After that, we can explore how to reach a higher level of energy independence. Solar energy presents the best opportunity for Chile, as it can not only reduce dependence on fuel imports but also transportation through electric networks. By using solar energy and advancing the energization of waste, Chile can achieve power self-sufficiency.
What are Gasco’s objectives for the mining sector in the coming years, and what message do you have for the Chilean mining community?
We aim to expand our presence in the mining sector by taking part in more significant projects with a broader scope. We prioritize renewable energy and energy efficiency while ensuring operational continuity. We ask mining companies to give us the chance to implement these solutions, as they have been successful in other parts of the world. Our solutions are economically competitive, environmentally friendly, and offer a guarantee of operational continuity.
